LaCygne is located 5 miles west of U.S. Highway 69 on Kansas Highway 152 (Linn County 2200 Road) in extreme eastern Kansas. The city lies in one of the most beautiful valleys of the state in the northern portion of Linn County. LaCygne was founded in 1870 on the banks of the Marais des Cygne River. The French translation for Marais des Cygne means "Marsh of the Swans". The French translation for La Cygne means "The Swan".
The city offers public water, sewer, and natural gas services to its residents. Refuse can be taken to the local compactor or, for a monthly fee, pick-up is available at your home or place of business. Electrical services are provided by Kansas City Power & Light. Local phone service, DSL internet plus other services are available through Peoples Telecommunications, Inc. Cable TV subscription through fiber optic phone lines is planned to be offered sometime in 2009.
The City of LaCygne is governed by an elected Mayor and a five-person city council. Members serve four-year terms on a staggered basis. The mayor and council are assisted by several appointed boards and committees that are assigned specific responsibilities.
